World's Worst Airports of 2014 (PHOTOS)

An unavoidable part of travel, airports are deemed memorable for its numerous dining options or fantastic shopping. Then there are the airports that are recognized for the dismal passenger experience they provide travelers.

The Guide to Sleeping in Airports, a travel website that provides tips for sleeping at airports, recently released its annual rankings of the worst aviation terminals. Despite the website's name, the rankings are not based on whether terminals are comfortable enough for sleeping during long layovers, but are based on tourist surveys that asked about comfort and crowds at terminals, Wi-Fi, food options, customer service and overall cleanliness.

After being named the worst airport three years in a row, Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport showed improvement in the annual rankings and only came in fourth this year. Instead, Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International Airport climbed to the first position as the world's worst airport. Travelers who participated in the survey criticized the third-largest airport in Pakistan, for the "crowds (and absence of crowd control), the pervasive corruption, the aggressive-yet-inconsistent security checks, and the overall lack of cleanliness and technology," according to Sleeping in Airports.

The only North American airport in the list, New York's La Guardia, was ranked at number 10. According to Sleeping in Airports' tourist surveys, travelers complain it has "poor restaurant selection, lackluster cleanliness, counterintuitive layout and the notoriously unhelpful staff.” Vice President Joe Biden once landed in hot water when he compared LGA to a “third world country.”
