The Worst Traffic Cities in America in 2014

Even though driving is on the decline in the U.S. — down some 10 percent since 2004 — there are still millions of vehicles on the country's streets, making commutes particularly hellish in major metro areas and up-and-coming metropolises.

Indeed, every day you have to climb into your car and inch along on the highway might just make you think your city has the worst traffic in the country. But can you prove it?

Luckily, there is a way to lay claim to the title of "Worst Traffic City in the U.S.," thanks to traffic services and information provider INRIX. The company complies an annual traffic scorecard for metro areas across the U.S. to determine the most traffic congested city across the U.S.

Among the factors INRIX takes into account to compile the scorecard: overall congestion, particularly congested areas in individual cities and the factor most near and dear to everyone's hearts, time wasted in traffic.

Unfortunately for all drivers across the country, traffic congestion grew in the U.S. for the first time in two years, up 6 percent since 2012. According to INRIX, 61 U.S. metro areas saw a marked increase in traffic congestion, spelling more hours behind the wheel for all of us.

But none more than the top 10 most congested American cities. On average, the drivers in America's 10 most congested cities wasted an average of 47 hours behind the wheel in traffic.
