Worst Traffic Corridors In the U.S.

There are few things worse than being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, especially during rush hour. But your gridlock may be more than just a stroke of bad luck. According to 2014 data from INRIX.com, these 25 roads are the worst traffic corridors in the United States. The results were found by compiling times and location data points from commercial vehicles, smartphones and connected cars with location devices.

According to INRIX, congestion wastes time, fuel and money. In 2014, traffic caused 6.9 billion hours of extra driving time and 3.1 billion gallons of wasted fuel. Drivers on America’s 10 very worst roads spent 84 hours, or 3.5 days, this year on average in gridlock, which is two times the national average.

INRIX says traffic conditions can be improved through new construction, more public transportation and more flexible work schedules -- so fewer people are travelling during rush hour.

Safety tips: Stay calm in traffic. Aggressive driving causes 56 percent of fatal car crashes, according to a study by the AAA Foundation.  Avoid actions that can aggravate other drivers, like cutting them off, and avoid eye contact and keep your distance from aggravated drivers. Also, stay off your phone in traffic. Cell phone use accounts for 12 percent of teen crashes, with distracted driving causing 56 percent of teen crashes overall.
