Other winning images showcase the beauty, diversity and unpredictability of the world—from waves crashing into a Turkish boardwalk during a storm and tourists coated in mud in the Dead Sea to a busy train station in Tokyo. Both professional and amateur photographers participate in the contest every year. Entrants submitted photos to 3 categories: people, places and nature, to be judged on creativity and photographic quality.

The first place winner in each category received $2,500. The winning photographs will be published in National Geographic.
