An Italian designer is crowdfunding to raise enough money to realize a plan to build a futuristic green city made up of floating pyramids.

Rome-based Lazzarini Design Studio says its proposed pyramid city, Wayaland, is set to be ready for residents as early as 2022. The future site of the floating city is yet to be determined, the studio told weather.com in an email.

To get the project started, architect Pierpaolo Lezzerini and his team of designers are crowdfunding to try to get the $500,000 necessary to build its first "Waya module," the design of which was inspired by a Mayan architecture and Japanese temples.

Those who contribute funds for the luxury water community will have a vote on the location of Wayaland, and will be given "citizenship" and a Waya passport that allows them to attend the 2022 inauguration.

Solar panels and water turbines will provide the energy for the floating city.

"The modular Waya pyramid can offer different living and entertainment settings, such hotel, shops, spa, gym, bars or cinema for any purpose," the studio said.
