When you walk through Wistman’s Wood, you may wonder if you’re walking through a fairytale. The ancient forest located in Devon, England, is home to mossy boulders and trees that curve in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

It’s also the subject to fine art photographer Neil Burnell’s “Mystical” series.

“I first visited Wistman’s with my parents in my childhood,” Burnell told weather.com. “I especially remember as if I was in a film set at the time.”

For this particular series, Burnell spent three years searching for the perfect landscape. “When you walk around Wistman’s for the first time you…almost feel like you are in a fantasy world,” he said. “This feeling is intensified if you happen to be there in mist or fog with low light conditions.”

The weather is an integral part of the “Mystical” series. In the around 20 times Burnell visited the woods, he has only found perfect mist conditions on two occasions. “Photographing [the woods] without the mist/fog (sic) is a hard task and almost impossible to make images with the atmosphere I was looking for,” Burnell said.

Despite the series taking a while for Burnell to work on, he says it was worth every moment. “I have already started on the second series of images which sees me revisit Wistman’s along with other moorland woodlands.”
