Escape Any Weather In These Cave Hotels

The first day of fall is this Thursday, but in much of the country, it doesn’t feel like summer will be ending any time soon. It’s been hot enough lately here in Atlanta to make me pine for a nice cold cave to sleep in. Here are a few spots where you can actually sleep in a cave for a night.

The Demeure de la Vignole Hotel in Turquant, France

France’s Loire Valley is famous for its troglodyte homes, and several hotels in the area feature rooms built into caves. The Demeure de la Vignole’s cave room is a two-story suite featuring a spiral staircase and even a few windows up top.

The Grand Canyon Caverns Cavern Suite

Located on Route 66 east of Peach Springs, Arizona, the Grand Canyon Caverns have a classic roadside attraction feel, with fabricated dinosaurs, an RV park and cave tours.

The Cavern Suite is a platform built into the cavern itself, accessible by an elevator, where you can sleep 200 feet underground. In addition to all the amenities you’d expect from a hotel room (including room service!) it has a record player, so bring your own vinyl to make use of the cave’s echoes. Guests say it’s a consistent 59 degrees down there, so make sure you pack a sweater!

Individual cave hotels are cool, but how about a whole town full of cave hotels?

In central Turkey, Göreme houses over a dozen cave hotels within its incredible hoodoo rock formations. People have been living in these formations since at least 1800 B.C., and possibly much longer.
