Weather Around The World

Does the bitter cold sweeping through much of the U.S. this week have you dreaming of decamping to distant climes? Here’s a look at what the weather is like in other parts of the world right now.

Germany

Freezing temperatures led to incredible images of hoarfrost covering many surfaces with crystalline layers of ice yesterday in Germany’s Harz mountains. The photo above was taken near the town of Halberstadt, and it makes the road look like something out of a fairy tale. Wondering how hoarfrost forms? We’ve got you covered.

France might not be getting the same kind of hoarfrost as Germany, but it’s still cold enough there that if you want to do the usual tourist things like tour outdoor historical sites, you’re going to need a really warm coat. Ok, armchair travelers, here’s a place that isn’t horrifically cold right now. The weather in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, has been hitting highs in the mid-80s, with temperatures expected to rise into the low 90s later this week. Yesterday, a man took advantage of some excellent fishing weather at a lake near Koh Rongeang village, near Phnom Penh.

As the southern hemisphere heads into the height of summer, sweltering temperatures in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, led many residents and travellers to head to the Barra de Guaratiba beach. Rain later this week is expected to help bring temps back down, with highs in the mid to upper 80s expected, which would be perfect beach weather if the rain dies down.
