Somewhere in the world, you'll find a lake that looks like it's been cut straight out of a fairy tale. Formed over 14,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, when a gigantic glacier carved out a sharp basin between mountains, Lake Bled later filled with meltwater that dripped then flowed down from the surrounding mountains. In the middle of Lake Bled, you'll find a tree-filled island that's home to a picturesque place of worship that was built in its current form near the end of the 17th century. It towers on a rocky cliff. For centuries, people have flocked to the lake for religious and also medicinal reasons: the waters of Lake Bled are said to have healing properties, and various spas and sites of natural healing have surrounded them for hundreds of years.

Although Lake Bled is surrounded by high mountains, its waters are surprisingly warm. That's because the lake is fed by mild, thermal springs. This means that in the summer, the water temperature can get up to 78.8 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a very relaxing place for a swim.

If you haven't guessed by now, you can find Lake Bled in Slovenia! It's located in the Julian Alps of the Upper Carniolan region of northwestern Slovenia, only a quick 22 miles from Ljubljana International Airport.
