Award-winning photographer Anup Shah is known as a master of wildlife photography. His recent book The Mara features stunning black and white photos of daily life in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve.

His work is intimate, framing animals in a light that captures details that are hard to come by. The series conveys the rhythm of the seasons, from the start of new life at the end of a rainy season to the hardships during a long and dry season. Rainy seasons are between November and December and return in the spring between March and May.

The reserve is a popular place to witness one of the greatest “shows” on earth of animal migration. Usually beginning some time in June or July, over 1.2 million wildebeests, 200,000 zebras, 18,000 antelopes and 500,000 gazelles move from the grassy landscape towards the Mara River.

In short, it is a raw look into the reality that the animals face in their natural environment.
