In a little under a year, 20-year-old Gabriel Scanu mastered the art of beautiful aerial photography.

The Australian photographer, videographer and creative director said he first encountered drones through a friend. “The imagery I got received a great reception online and I guess it just took off from there—literally,” he told weather.com.

What kept him interested was realizing the range of work he could achieve with a drone. “Photography has been something [that] I’ve always had in my life from a young age, but when I was first introduced to the world of droning a little under a year ago, I instantly fell in love with the endless possibilities it enabled,” he said. “The fact that you can shoot things from the sky and have complete freedom in your range of motion is insane.”

According to Scanu, photography is “all about perspectives.” His overall aim is to provide people with a unique perspective on everyday places. “Giving people a sense of atmosphere and a general vibe or moment is really important to me and is really emphasized through my aerial imagery.”

His style of work is only possible when the weather permits. Scanu flies his drone on clear and calm days with no wind or rain, elements that can take a toll on the drone’s performance and safety features.

Of all his aerial photo work, Scanu says his favorite shot is of Bronte Beach Rock Pool in Sydney, a popular destination with local surfers and known for its rough waters. Interestingly, he took this photo by accident while talking to someone about how the drone functions. “To me that’s the best part,” he said, “I was just capturing a raw moment without even realizing it.”

The photo itself depicts a diverse array of people and activity on the beach. “There were tiny people swimming laps in the pool, people with surf boards sitting on the side and waves crashing off in the distance,” he said. “To me, it is just the perfect representation of a summer day in Australia.”

For those who want to explore this genre of photography, Scanu recommends that they just take the chance and “give it a go.”
