According to a fact sheet provided by the Trans Canada Trail, a non-profit organization responsible for the 13,000-mile network of trails, the endeavor began as a bold dream in 1992 as "a trail that would be a gift from Canadians to Canadians" to "create the longest and grandest recreational trail in the world.”

Over the past two decades, the organization has been working with donors, partners, governments and volunteers to create "an epic trail of trails offering a wide range of outdoor experiences on both land and water routes," according to Deborah Apps, president and  CEO of Trans Canada Trail.

The Great Trail, which will be completed in 2017 just in time for Canada's 150th birthday, is a multi-use recreational trail that will allow enthusiasts of walking, hiking, biking, paddling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling to enjoy all that Canada has to offer.
