Dubai is a city known for innovation with its spiraling buildings and indoor ski slopes, and soon, the United Arab Emirate's desert city will be home to the world's first drone taxis.

This is not something dreamed of for the future. In fact, the passenger-carrying drones, or autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs), will be made available to clients by July, according to dubai.com.

EHang, a Guangzhou, China-based firm, announced that the EHang 184 will be ready for passengers in just a few short weeks. The drone will be able to fly up to 11,000 feet without a pilot and carry up to 255 pounds of weight. Authorities in Dubai were so impressed by the 440-pound drone presented at the Consumer Technology Association's CES 2016, they ordered a fleet of the pilot-less aircraft.

According to the Wall Street Journal, tests are underway and once the service is in full swing, passengers will use an app to plot their GPS before pressing a launch button. Once in the air, the battery-operated drone can reach a top speed of 100 miles per hour and travel up to 31 miles on a single charge.

While the idea of flying a battery-powered drone might sound downright terrifying, EHang assures potential passengers that the aircraft is perfectly safe and is equipped with emergency plans, just in case.

Local authorities see the move as a solution to the city's ever-growing traffic problem. The city's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to have roughly 25 percent of all Dubai's traffic driverless by 2030.
