“In Waxahachie, Texas, when it rains, it pours,” photographer Elaine Baca told weather.com. The relentless rain led her to reschedule a maternity shoot several times, until the expectant mother, Brittany Barton, decided to embrace the weather.

“They have a huge backyard, which backs up to a field, and I knew it had lots of muddy puddles, so I asked [Brittany] what she thought about laying in the rain and ending with a mud fight,” Baca said. “I don’t think she even hesitated, she said she trusted my vision and wanted to go for it.”

After multiple attempts at rescheduling to avoid the rain, they decided to accept the weather as is and shoot during the pour. However, the weather wasn’t as “severe” as Baca had hoped on the day of the shoot. “The forecast indicated it would be raining the entire day, but the time I arrived, it was only drizzling,” she said. “The rain would’ve added another fun element to this shoot.”

Despite the lack of rain, there was plenty of mud, which was a challenge in itself. “Working with small children and having children of my own, I am well aware that getting messy is just part of the job,” she said. “The mud was very thick, though, so it was a little tricky to maneuver at times.”

The unconventional photoshoot will become a memorable for the Bartons. The mud provided the family of four, now five, an opportunity to be themselves to wrestle and play like they would as if they weren’t being photographed.

“It’s so rare that I see two parents who work so well together to raise and care for their children while being so in love,” Baca said.

“The Bartons had an amazing afternoon playing and letting loose together, creating memories they will all remember for a lifetime.”
