Home to stunning mediterranean beaches, roman ruins, the Dolomites mountains, and ancient cities, it is easy to see why Italy often tops tourists’ bucket lists. In fact, in 2013, the country welcomed 46.4 million international visitors, reports The BBC, making it the fifth most visited country in the world.

Italy is home to two impressive, medieval walled cities: Gradara and San Gimignano. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, Gradara is home to one of the best preserved castles in the country, while San Gimignano was originally an Etruscan village that grew in prominence in the 12th century before its population was decimated by a 1348 plague, according to Lonely Planet. The city resembles a medieval Manhattan because its skyscape is characterized by 15 tall towers.

One place not to miss is the Blue Grotto, a sea cave on the coast of the island of Capri with water that glows a distinctive blue. The color is created by daylight, which enters the cave from a small underwater opening located immediately below the entrance of the cave. The light is then filtered by the water, which absorbs the red tones, creating the blue glow.

Italy is also home to some of the world’s most famous wine regions, such as the Emilia-Romagna region. Located in the northern part of the country, this region - famous for its Lambrusco wine - is one of the oldest viticultural areas, with wine production dating back to the seventh century B.C. The area is also a great destinations for foodies, as it is known for its culinary delicacies including lasagna, parmesan and prosciutto

There are also many hidden gems in Italy that are often overlooked by travelers who come to Italy to explore the ancient ruins of Rome or explore the museums in Milan. For example, in Lake Reschen there is a submerged steeple of a 14th-century church that can be seen protruding from the water, and in the winter, visitors can walk across the frozen lake to explore the bell tower.
