50 Stunning Places to See in Scandinavia (PHOTOS)

Scandinavia, a region of northern Europe, is often associated with reindeer, beautiful fjords and, of course, lots of snow. In fact, it snows at least eight months out of the year in the cities of Helsinki and Stockholm, says Nick Wiltgen, digital meteorologist for weather.com. In the snowiest parts of Scandinavia, such as the mountains of Norway and the far northwest of Sweden, snow is on the ground up to 240 days a year, according to Wiltgen.

The good news is all this snow makes Scandinavia an excellent travel destination if you are looking for a winter wonderland escape. Norway offers wildlife lovers polar bear boat tours through the arctic wilderness of the Svalbard Islands, and reindeer safaris in Eikesdalen to see Europe’s last remaining population of wild reindeer. In Finland, travelers can see Santa all year round at the “official” Santa Claus Village of Rovaniemi and they can sleep in a glass igloo hotel under the Northern Lights. Sweden's Jukkasjärvi Ice Hotel is also not to be missed, if you aren’t afraid of the cold.

Once the snow melts, Scandinavia is a great place to avoid the heat and humidity of other popular, warm-weather destinations. “Summer weather is generally temperate,” says Wiltgen. “Heat waves are rare and temperatures are comfortable across most of the region.” This, and all the extra light, makes for an excellent time to explore the stunning castles of Denmark, including the UNESCO World Heritage Kronborg Castle, famous for being the setting of Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet.”

From vertigo-inducing cliffs like Norway’s “Pulpit Rock” to scenic islands like those the Stockholm Archipelago, Scandinavia is full of unforgettable land and seascapes that deserve a place on your must-see list. Here are 50 of our favorite places you have to see.
