“I was fascinated that you can see the milky way, but I had absolutely no idea how to take a picture of it,” Holzer said.

Purchasing the star tracker helped him understand the sky’s movements and his research helped him find the best times to capture the Milky Way. “You can catch the Milky Way best when there’s a new moon and it’s really dark, which makes it a little bit creepy in most cases,” he said.

To capture the split views of the sky and water of the Isar River in Germany, Holzer battled through cold temperatures in the late, darkest hours of the night.

“The Milky Way underwater was a real challenge because it took the whole night to find the correct lighting and position,” he said.

Holzer used a long exposure to capture the foreground and a star tracker for the sky. With a combination of various cameras and specific light placements, Holzer managed to create stunning photographs.
