TripAdvisor, the travel planning and booking site, announced the winners of its Travelers’ Choice awards for Landmarks, and Machu Picchu, the Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley, was ranked the number one landmark in the world. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC, the site of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous "I Have a Dream" speech, topped the list of best U.S. landmarks.

"These Travelers’ Choice award-winning landmarks attract millions of visitors each year and represent some of the world’s most impressive examples of human ingenuity,"said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor. "Travelers who want to discover, or rediscover, these iconic attractions can book tours for unique experiences including in some cases exclusive behind-the-scenes access."

Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for landmarks worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period.
