While some home bakers are willing to sneak their homemade sourdough loaves into Whole Foods to use the grocery store's bread slicing machine, most of us aren't quite so bold.

If you're looking for a much simpler way to slice crusty round loaves of bread — whether homemade or purchased from a bakery — read on for a tip that's been going viral on social media.

Try This Easy Method for Easily Cutting Round Bread

"Everybody is cutting their loaves of bread so wrong," baker Grace Fahey (@betterbakeskitchen) says in an Instagram video. "I'm sorry. You're cutting it so wrong. And it hurts me every time I see it."

As she explains, most people cut a loaf by simply laying it flat and then slicing one piece at a time. However, if your loaf has a stiff crust, it can be difficult to cut even pieces without the loaf sliding around on the cutting board or the loaf getting squished. Plus, you're more likely to accidentally slip and cut your finger, especially if you're trying to make thin pieces.

Instead, here's an easier way to cut a loaf of boule, according to Fahey:

  1. Place your loaf on a cutting board, and slice it once down the middle.
  2. Take one half and flip it on its side, with the inside of the loaf flat on the cutting board. Now with its flat base, your half-loaf should be strong, stable and not slip around.
  3. Slice one piece of your half-loaf at a time. Repeat with the other half. Now, you'll have perfectly even half-slices of your loaf.

"Yes it's half of a slice, but look how perfectly little [it is]," Fahey says. "This'll fit in your toaster, you won't be shoving like a huge slice of bread in your toaster. Put the two halves in your toaster, you have a whole slice of bread."

People Are Divided Over This Hack for Slicing Bread

Fahey first posted the video back in April 2025, and she reposted it recently, making the tip go viral once again — and people are still mesmerized by the brilliant simplicity of this hack.

"🤯 Wow!!! This is going to make my life so much easier! I literally mangled a loaf of bread last night! 😂," someone commented on Fahey's video. "That’s how it’s done! 👏👏," added another commenter.

However, not everyone agreed that this is the best way to slice a boule. In the comment section, many people suggested that simply using a sharper knife should be able to cut bread the "regular" way just fine.

"Start from one end and finish at the other. It’s not difficult," read one comment. "Learn to use a knife. No normal person squashes a loaf while cutting. You apply light pressure to the knife."
