8. Mackinac Island, Michigan

Average July high: 75°F

Expect crisp lake breezes

With a car-free environment, this island is great for escaping the hustle and bustle.  You can bike or hike while enjoying refreshing lake breezes.

7. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Average July high: 85°

Expect warm lake days

AAA describes Lake Geneva as a serene vacation spot, with a charming downtown and historic homes.  With summer high temperatures in the 80s, you’ll definitely want to explore boating and swimming in the lake.

Expect hot, humid and tropical

If you like your summers toasty, Captiva Island is for you. But unlike Florida’s more popular destinations, you’ll get unspoiled beaches and a peaceful retreat from the everyday.

Expect hot and dry desert conditions

Outdoor lovers will enjoy the red rocks of Sedona. AAA says this getaway offers a “breathtaking landscape and spiritual vibes.”  Just be sure to hydrate early and often as temperatures scorch towards 100.

Expect high and dry conditions

Mammoth Lakes is a popular ski destination during winter, but in the summer the crowds are gone. You can enjoy crisp mountain air and crystal clear lakes, plus a vibrant arts scene.
