A three-day nightmare ended with tail wags and tears of relief for one Northern California family after firefighters rescued their black pug, Shadow, from a construction site hole nearly 20 feet deep.

Marin County Fire Department crews responded around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a dog trapped at a construction site in Lagunitas, a small community in Marin County (near San Francisco). Shadow had fallen into a narrow hole approximately 3 to 4 feet in diameter within a much larger excavation area that was too deep and too tight for the dog to escape on his own.

Firefighters drew on cross-training between their engine companies and Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) teams to carry out a confined space rescue, carefully working their way down to reach Shadow and bring him safely to the surface.

The rescue marked the end of a three-day search for the missing pug, who was reunited with his relieved family shortly after being pulled from the hole.

"Every call is different, and we're proud to use our specialized rescue training to help both people and pets when they need us most," the department wrote in a social media post announcing Shadow's rescue.

No injuries were reported.
