When Southern California’s historic south swell lit up the coast last week, most eyes were fixed on giant waves detonating at the usual heavy-water suspects, such as Newport Beach's The Wedge. But one of the more dramatic scenes unfolded far from the marquee spots, at Laguna Beach’s typically tranquil Crescent Bay.

A video shared on Instagram captures the cove in an almost unrecognizable state. Huge waves surge into the bay, exploding on the shore and transforming the idyllic swimming beach into a cauldron of whitewater. Then, the situation takes a serious turn.

Several swimmers are swept away from shore and carried beyond the breaking waves by a powerful rip current generated by the swell. As the video rolls, the stranded swimmers can be seen bobbing outside in turbulent seas while onlookers watch powerlessly from the cliffs above, and the beach below. Check out the clip:

Fortunately, Laguna Beach Marine Safety was already on high alert during the run of dangerous surf. Moments later, a lifeguard rescue boat arrives on scene, navigating through the rough ocean conditions to reach the swimmers.

Per the lifeguards:

“The victims were carried beyond the surf line by a powerful rip current. A lifeguard reached the victims and assisted them aboard Wave Watch, where the crew safely transported them shoreward.

“Because of the large surf, the vessel remained outside the reef while the crew timed the swell and waited for a safe opening. Once conditions allowed, the victims were brought closer to shore and transferred safely back to the beach.”

Comments included:

"Ummmm why are they swimming?!"

"This is no joke people. I had 3 lifeguards rescue me out of there 5 years ago. I definitely thought I was going to die. You panic and hyperventilate out there."

"Laguna guards are second to none!"

The footage serves as a stark reminder that even Southern California’s most picturesque beaches can become hazardous when powerful long-period swells arrive. Crescent Bay is typically known for calm water, snorkeling, and family beach days—not towering surf and open-ocean rescues.

This rescue was just one of many amidst the week-long spell of dangerous conditions across Southern California, where lifeguards have responded to hundreds of ocean emergencies linked to strong rip currents and oversized surf. Officials have repeatedly warned beachgoers to exercise caution, noting that long-period south swells can create deceptively powerful currents even at beaches that rarely see significant wave action.

As the lifeguards wisely advised and added:

“Rip currents can move swimmers away from shore quickly, especially during large surf events. Before entering the water, stop by a lifeguard tower and ask about current ocean conditions. We are always here and ready to help.”

Always listen to the lifeguards – always.
