Steamer Lane is crumbling once again, and this time, the ocean almost claimed more than just the shoreline. A wild new video has been circulating, which captures the exact moment a massive chunk of the iconic West Cliff Drive headland sheered off and detonated directly into the lineup. The falling debris narrowly missed a surfer who was tracking down the line just feet from the impact zone.

The terrifying collapse follows a historic early-summer swell that has been hammering the California coast, delivering heavy, long-period energy up and down the California coast. But while local chargers were losing their minds scoring the massive summer opener, the relentless hydraulic hammer of the waves proved to be too much for the already fragile cliffs. Coastal erosion was rampant.

Watch the video below.

SURFER Magazine has previously reported on the ongoing degradation of the Lane's legendary bluffs from past years, which have taken an absolute beating over recent swell events. But watching a sea bluff collapse in real-time while a surfer is actively riding a wave elevates the situation from a geologic concern to an absolute nightmare scenario. In the footage, a massive cloud of dust and boulders explodes into the water right where surfers typically sit to wait for sets.

Local Santa Cruz surf legend Ken “Skindog” Collins issued this advisory:

“Boys Update. Big chunk of the cliff at The Lane fell in, and an even bigger chunk is soon to follow. Probably a good idea to not to surf next to it. If you are not an advanced surfer, you might want to consider other options. There are much safer places to go to. This new chunk of rocks in the lineup are going to claim peoples’ surfboards guaranteed. Ding repair is gonna skyrocket. Be careful.”

While coastal erosion is the natural force that originally sculpted the Lane’s world-class setups, the rapid acceleration of these cave-ins has everyone on edge…literally.

For now, the arena remains highly unpredictable. If you’re planning on paddling out or watching from the lighthouse, give the zone a wide berth. The ocean may be firing, with more swell on tap, but the ceiling is coming down.
