Northern California received a jolt in the form of a moderate earthquake on Wednesday morning, not far from Redwood Valley.

Preliminary reports from the U.S. Geological Survey said the 5.6 magnitude quake occurred at 8:10 a.m. local time. The epicenter was in Mendocino County, about 6 miles north of Redwood Valley, California, and was a shallow 5 miles beneath the surface.

Residents in the area reported receiving a USGS Shake Alert notification prior to the tremor.

There were no reports of injuries or significant damage, nor is there a tsunami threat in the area.

Within two hours of the main earthquake, there were at least three aftershocks 2.5 magnitude or higher. USGS says there's only a 7% chance of a magnitude 5 or stronger aftershock.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom was briefed on the situation and is in touch with emergency officials, according to a social media post from his office.

Redwood Valley is located about 130 miles northwest of Sacramento, where shaking was reportedly felt, as well as in San Francisco.
