ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A warm-up is headed to north Georgia this weekend, with dangerous heat and scattered thunderstorms creating a one-two punch for the region.

Partly cloudy today

Today will be the calmest day of the extended forecast, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 80s. It’s the last comfortable day before the heat intensifies.

Hot with storms this weekend

Saturday and Sunday will be a different story. Highs will climb into the 90s, with heat index values approaching 100 degrees, making it feel much hotter than the actual temperature.

The dangerous heat will be accompanied by scattered thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and evening hours both days. These storms could produce gusty winds and heavy downpours.

Hotter, dry next week

Heading into next week, high pressure will settle over north Georgia, bringing more consistent dry weather. However, the heat will continue to build, with highs in the mid-90s expected throughout the week.

What You Should Do

  • Stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours (afternoon and evening).
  • Keep an eye on the sky Saturday and Sunday for developing storms.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and pets during the heat wave.
  • Have a weather radio or phone alerts ready for any storm warnings.
