Historic wildfires in France and Spain have forced more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes in one of the largest evacuation efforts in the region since World War II.

The EU’s European Forest Fire Information System estimates 1,160 square miles have burned in the two countries.

The current state of the fires

A wildfire in Ávila, northwest of Madrid, has become Spain’s largest on record, scorching 193 square miles, the government said — that's five times the size of Barcelona.

In France, a fire that has neared the city of Bordeaux had stopped growing Monday, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said. But he warned that some areas were still smoldering.

Officials in both countries hope to get better control of the fires before another heat wave begins on Tuesday.

The human impact

Rocío Domínguez fled her home with only what she was wearing.

“All the clothes, all the memories, everything, everything, everything,” were left behind, she told The Associated Press.

“The only thing I had time to grab was a kit I have for the dogs,” Domínguez added, surrounded by her two beloved pets. Everything else she has with her now — from the clothes she wears to her food and toiletries — she received at the shelter.
