Photographers around the world captured beautiful images of the chunks of space rock streaking across the sky.

The Perseids are regarded as one of the best meteor showers of the year. It can produce up to 100 meteors an hour.

The show was helped this year because of the new moon, which kept the sky darker.

The Perseids, which appear to come from the constellation Perseus, are made up of dust and debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.

Some of the specks are no larger than a grain of sand, but they can smash into Earth's atmosphere at 133,000 mph.

Tonight offers another chance to catch a glimpse; the show is expected to last until Aug. 24.
