Fall grocery list: better produce in colder weather

If you want produce that tastes sweeter, crunches harder and carries more flavor, autumn is the season to load up on cold-loving fruits and vegetables. Falling temperatures prompt certain crops to build up more natural sugars as a defense against frost and discourages the plant diseases and pests that thrive in summer humidity. Translated into a shopping list: apples, pears, cranberries and pomegranates, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, kale, broccoli and Brussels sprouts round out a proper fall feast.
