It's pretty impossible trying to learn in a classroom that feels like 90 degrees.

For thousands of Philadelphia students, that hasn't been a hypothetical.

Hot, humid weather has forced district schools without adequate air conditioning to send kids home early, sometimes in the very first weeks of the school year.

Now, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is helping to change that, one touchdown (and one HVAC system) at a time.

In fact, Hurts's "Keep It Cool Initiative" just made its biggest donation yet: $600,000 for a new cooling system at Northeast High School, one of the district's largest student bodies.

The announcement came Tuesday in the school's auditorium, where more than 1,000 students, teachers and staff packed into a space that was, fittingly, still sweltering despite mild temperatures outside.

And that's the whole point.

When Philadelphia's temperatures climb, schools without cooling can face schedule disruptions or an abrupt switch to virtual learning.

As of this year, more than half of the district's 218 schools still lack adequate air conditioning. During a heat event last month, many of those schools had to dismiss students early as temperatures approached 90 degrees.

Hurts has been trying to change that since 2024, when his foundation helped put 300 air-conditioning units into 10 Philadelphia schools, reaching more than 5,500 students.

He also pledged $5,000 toward the effort for every touchdown he scores.

And there's a personal connection here.

Hurts isn't just the Eagles' star quarterback, but the son of two educators. 

He's talked about being stunned that Philadelphia schools could close because of heat, something he learned about after seeing a news report.

And now, Northeast High is one step closer to making sure the weather outside never gets in the way of what's possible inside.
