Two women place glowing pumpkin faces in their garden in Sieversdorf, Germany. Halloween, which is traditionally celebrated on the night of Oct. 31 through Nov. 1, has its roots in a Celtic custom. Spooky masks were used to ward off evil spirits at the start of the dark season.

Autumn colors begin to emerge as a white hart deer runs past visitors in the grounds of Dunham Massey parkland on Oct. 30, 2026, in Altrincham, England. The UK’s record-breaking hot and dry summer has created a highly unpredictable, complex and muted autumn display characterized by “false autumns” and extreme tree stress. While the abundance of summer sunshine gave trees the perfect ingredients to produce vibrant colors, severe drought has forced many species into survival mode, disrupting the traditional seasonal transition.
