This 'Every Season' Dog Bed Is Dog-Tested (And Approved)

It was time for a new dog bed following a very cold winter, and my large breed dog heartily approves of this dual-temperature "every season" orthopedic bed. It's available on Amazon starting at $25.

Whether you have a growing puppy or white-whiskered senior, there comes a time when it’s critical to invest in a comfortable dog bed. If your dog is hard on their beds, it’s even more difficult to find a “tough enough” option that still provides some level of comfort without the awful mess if they tear through the fabric.

I was looking for a new dog bed after my Rottweiler’s bed finally bit the dust. The padding was thin, the fabric had become threadbare, and it was plastered in dog hair since she’s been shedding something awful this season. Thankfully, now that she’s older, she’s not hard on her bedding…she realizes that destroying it means she’s left with nothing until I can order another one.

So during much trial and error, I was on the hunt for the best dog bed. I reviewed multiple options, but I really needed something thick and padded, machine washable and a dog bed that could transition in spring from cold to warm.

Features:

  • Waterproof cover, machine washable
  • 4 sizes: medium, large, XL, XXL
  • 3.5-inch orthopedic egg-crate foam
  • Sherpa side and cool oxford fabric side for year-round comfort

This Tail Stories Orthopedic Dog Bed with removable cover is my latest dog bed purchase. It was reasonably priced (not the lowest price in its competitive set, but certainly not the most I’ve ever spent), and was delivered promptly within 24 hours.

I chose the two-sided option, one with sherpa for cold days we’ve still been experiencing, and one with a “cool” side with a type of canvas texture to it for those hot summer days when she’s simply too hot to lay on a fuzzy bed.

When delivered, it fluffed up very quickly after being freed from the wrapping. It was a smaller box than I was expecting for an extra-large bed size. She immediately clambered on top and was out like a light within 30 minutes.

The cover is removable for cleaning, and can be flipped upside down for the canvas side. I wouldn’t suggest the dual-fabric option if you intend to use this outdoors. The bed is also available in a single-fabric option if you need it for camping or traveling.

For waterproofing, the reviews are split. Some say it works well for incontinent dogs, while others say it doesn’t hold up. Perhaps it could withstand a mild sprinkling, but that would be about it. I haven’t tested the waterproofing yet, but will update when I have a chance to try it out.

My Review (Dog-Tested And Approved)

I purchased the Tail Stories Orthopedic Dog Bed after reading the reviews and seeing the available sizes. I had also heavily debated on the Bedsure Dog Bed (it has 4.5-stars and a lot of good reviews), but I wanted the oxford fabric for the dual-temperature option.

So far, so good - it’s been in use for over a week, and there are no tears or thin patches in the padding. The cushioning seems reasonable and comfortable - it’s not plush like a pillow, but not so thin that it acts more like a crate pad instead of a bed. My dog hasn’t hesitated to sleep on it throughout the night. I have other pillow-type beds and thin sherpa crate pads that she could pick from, but she prefers this orthopedic dog bed during the night.

As mentioned earlier, my dog is not hard on beds now that she’s older, so I don’t have to worry about her tearing through the zipper to get to the padding. This bed would not be tough enough to withstand that kind of abuse.

I notice her hair does cling to the sherpa fleece, which I expected, but the removable cover will be easy to vacuum and throw in the wash as needed.

Overall, I’ve been pleased with the purchase, and pleasantly surprised at the quality. I’d pay a similar or possibly higher price if I purchased it at the pet store, but I wouldn’t say it’s any kind of “steal” when it comes to price point. I’ve paid double for thicker, fluffier beds, so it largely depends on what kind of bed your dog prefers. This would be an easy option to throw in the back of a truck or SUV for a trip or quick errands.
