Changes in an updated April outlook call for a cooler trend to the forecast for many in the southern half of the United States, especially in the Southwest.

The Northeast could experience the warmest April compared to average. Parts of New York and New England, especially Maine, have the highest chance of warmer-than-average temperatures, according to the latest outlook released Friday by The Weather Company and Atmospheric G2.

April Temperature Outlook

The Southwest could see the coolest temperatures compared to average. Much of the southern half of the U.S. is predicted to see temperatures near or below average. Locations from Southern California into Nevada, Utah and New Mexico could be the coldest compared to average.

There is some uncertainty in the forecast, especially toward the end of the month. An upper-level blocking pattern is expected to continue through the first half of the month, allowing colder air to seep into the western and central U.S.

By the middle to the end of April, a change to the upper-level pattern could cause colder air to move out of the West and into the East, according to Dr. Todd Crawford, Vice President of Meteorology at Atmospheric G2.

Average highs in April become much more pleasant. In general, highs in the 60s and 70s are typical in much of the southern half of the country. South Florida, South Texas and part of the Desert Southwest are a bit warmer with 80s.

Highs in the northern half of the country typically range from the 40s near the Canadian border and in the Rockies to 50s and 60s elsewhere.
