Winter Storm Hektor Glazed Parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas with Ice (RECAP)

Winter Storm Hektor brought patchy ice to parts of the South over the weekend before moving into the Midwest and later into the Northeast.

Before Hektor was named, light icing of bridges and some sleet were reported in southern Mississippi the morning of Jan. 9, including the Hattiesburg and McComb areas, as initial weak subtropical jet-stream energy triggered some precipitation along the southern edge of an arctic air mass.

A stronger disturbance in the subtropical jet stream then moved into Texas, providing lift for precipitation in the colder air over parts of west and central Texas on Jan 10.

Some ramps in San Antonio, Texas were closed during the early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 10, and 0.10 inch of freezing rain was reported west of San Antonio in Utopia, Texas, with ice accumulation on trees, roofs, and porches.

Winter storm warnings for the Austin and San Antonio areas prompted The Weather Channel to name this winter storm, as those warnings exceeded the minimum population threshold of 2 million people.

The morning of Sunday, Jan. 11, light freezing rain was reported in parts of southeastern Oklahoma, Arkansas and southern and eastern Missouri. Most locations reported a light glaze on exposed and elevated surfaces such as tree branches. However, some slick travel conditions were also reported, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Hektor moved on to bring more snow, sleet and freezing rain to parts of the Ohio Valley and southern Great Lakes region on Sunday afternoon and evening and brought icy conditions to major Northeastern cities the morning of Monday, Jan. 12.
