This year is a bit of a strange one so far: Most of the seasonal influenza outbreak to date has been concentrated in just a few states, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But these states are somewhat scattered across the country.

Delaware is experiencing low flu activity, according to the CDC's most recent weekly flu report. But because this season is off to such a mild start, it's still one of the worst states for this year's flu.

New York, specifically New York City, is ranking as one of the worst areas for this year's flu outbreak, according to the CDC, though total numbers and fatalities are still relatively low.

Louisiana

Louisiana is experiencing moderate activity this year, making it the fourth-worst state for the flu.

Much of the year's most-severe flu cases have been located in the South, according to the CDC. Dr. Susan Rehm, M.D., medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and Cleveland Clinic's vice chairman of the Department of Infectious Diseases, told weather.com that the reasons for this are not yet clear.

Forty-four states are experiencing minimal flu activity this year, according to the CDC's most recent weekly report. A stark contract to last year, when all 48 states in the continental United States experienced flu activity and deaths early in the season.
