It’s simple. It’s sweet. And it’s made with sour cream! My favorite dessert recipe offers a twist on the classic apple pie and it’s quite versatile to serve at any time of day – hot or cold.

This recipe has been in my family for decades and I have warm memories of standing at the kitchen sink as a child, peeling green apples, and listening to the hubbub of laughter and loud talking around me.

My family of five was always excited to make – and devour – this pie. We never baked other classic fruit pies from scratch; only this one.

In fact, I rummaged through my recipes and found guidance on cakes and cookies, but no other pies.

And the rumpled old index card with the hand-written ingredients and instructions is lovingly called ‘Barr’s Apple Pie,' a clear indication of our family’s fondness for this unique treat.

Recipe: Sour Cream Apple Pie

When this pie is out of the oven, it’s imperative that you let it set for a short time, otherwise you’ll be serving it in bowls as a soupy heap.

However, this is almost always how we ate the pie because we could not wait to dig in. Once it’s cooler, a slice will take on a more custard-like form.

Add a little vanilla or cinnamon ice cream!

Also, this is a fantastic breakfast pie – served cold. Take a slice directly from the refrigerator and indulge with your first cup of coffee.
