A wildfire near the popular resort town of Marmaris, Turkey, brought up memories of last summer’s wildfires in the region, which were considered the worst in the country’s history.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday that the blaze was largely under control after thousands of firefighters worked for days to contain the fire. Erdogan told reporters that the fire affected more than 15 square miles of forest.

The country, like much of Europe, was experiencing a heat wave, and the addition of heavy winds helped fuel the fire, as well as extended drought conditions in the Mediterranean. Northern Cyprus was also battling a wildfire on Thursday that consumed more than 15 square miles in the Pentadaktylos mountain range.

The Associated Press reported that 19 people in the region were hospitalized due to complications caused by the blaze.

According to state-run Anadolu Agency, authorities detained a person who allegedly confessed to starting the fire intentionally.
