A​larms for the quake sounded less than an hour after the country conducted a nationwide earthquake simulation to mark the anniversary of two major quakes that struck on the same date.

P​hotos show the damage left behind after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Mexico's Pacific coast Monday afternoon. Crumbled structures are seen in the state of Colima and debris is scattered on sidewalks in Manzanillo.

A​t least one person died in the earthquake when a wall collapsed at a mall in Manzanillo, the Associated Press reported.

T​he quake struck at 1:05 p.m. local time at a depth of about 9 miles. The epicenter was located about 23 miles southeast of Aquila.

T​he ground shook as far as Mexico City some 400 miles away, where buildings were evacuated as a precaution and power went out in some areas. Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum tweeted that there was no major damage at the capital.

A​larms sounded just about an hour after the country held a nationwide earthquake simulation marking the anniversary of two major quakes— on Sept. 19, 1985, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake centered near the coast of Guerrero killed at least 9,500 people, and a quake on Sept. 19, 2017, about 34 miles south of the Mexican town of Pubebla, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck, killing more than 360.
