A​ post-tropical storm formerly known as Hurricane Fiona dealt a severe blow to Atlantic Canada on Saturday, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands and destroying structures with its fierce winds and storm surge.

T​he storm hammered Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island, forcing many residents to evacuate the coast as homes were washed away. It was believed to be the most intense landfalling storm in Canada since record-keeping began.

F​iona had previously struck several Caribbean islands, including Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, as a Category 1 hurricane. It then moved northward and strengthened into a major hurricane as it brushed Bermuda on its way to Canada.
