Photos out of Florida are showing the catastrophic damage Hurricane Ian brought to the state.

H​urricane Ian made landfall along Florida's southwest coast near Cayo Costa around 3:05 p.m. Wednesday. The storm then made a second landfall approximately an hour and a half later in Pirate Harbor south of Punta Gorda, packing maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. Photos out of Florida are showing catastrophic damage brought by the Category 4 hurricane.

T​he storm brought major storm surge to much of Southwest Florida. In Naples, over 6 feet of storm surge was measured Wednesday afternoon as the storm approached landfall, the largest storm surge in at least 50 years. The gauge broke after making that measurement.

W​ater levels crept to the top of homes' first floors in Fort Myers Beach as the storm's eye moved over the area, while some images on social media appeared to show water nearly up to some buildings roofs. T​he Coast Guard was rescuing individuals from roofs as water levels rose , according to U.S. Coast Guard commander Rear Adm Brendan McPherson.

P​resident Biden has signed a major disaster declaration for the state, availing federal funding to the affected areas.

​Photos show damaged boats and inundated roads throughout the southwestern part of the state. More than 320,000 people were still without power on Wednesday in the state, according to poweroutage.com

I​an regained strength as a hurricane after weakening into a tropical storm for a time, and made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in South Carolina on Friday. The storm has killed at least 128 people, 120 in Florida, five in North Carolina and three in Cuba.
