PHOTOS: Soaked South Florida Seen From Above

A​erial photos showed neighborhood streets covered in water in Miami Thursday, after as much as 2 feet of rain fell across the southern half of the Florida peninsula.

P​eople waded through water to get to work and pushed cars off flooded roadways.

M​any streets were littered with abandoned vehicles.

“You know when it's coming,” Ted Rico, a Miami tow truck driver, told The Associated Press. “Every year it’s just getting worse and for some reason, people just keep going through the puddles.”

R​esidents were asked to stay home as damage assessments and emergency response continued.

A​ state of emergency was declared for five Florida counties - Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade and Sarasota. Cities affected besides Miami included Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Naples, Fort Myers and Sarasota.

S​chool campuses were closed and summer activities canceled in Broward County.

S​ummer travel was affected by road closures, including a portion of Interstate 95 on Wednesday, and hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed at airports including Miami International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International.
