At least 42 people have died due to aggressive wildfires in Northern California's Napa, Sonoma, Yuba and Mendocino counties. The fires have destroyed at least 5,700 homes and businesses as hundreds of firefighters attempt to stem the blazes which have burned more than 330 square miles.

Fire officials say it was the deadliest week of wildfires in the state's history.

An estimated 100,000 people were ordered to evacuate, but nearly 70,000 have been allowed to return to their homes. The Sonoma Sheriff's Department said they received more than 1,700 missing-person reports; officials have been able to track down nearly all of those people.Conditions improved at the beginning of the week, and firefighters have been able to corral the fires better in recent days, which has allowed some of the evacuations to be lifted. They're hopeful they've turned a corner but remain wary of the dangerous fires.
