Red and orange alerts have been issued throughout Europe, including in parts of France, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium, as a dangerous heat wave sweeps the continent this week.

The temperatures, which are moving in from northern Africa, could smash all-time record highs for June in western and northern Europe. Paris is likely to reach temperatures in the 90s through Saturday, and Madrid, Spain, could reach several degrees over 100 late in the week through Sunday.

National weather authorities throughout Europe have warned people to avoid strenuous activities during midday, to avoid the sun and to drink plenty of water.

In Paris, the government has installed mist showers throughout the city and opened cool rooms in public buildings, according to CNN. Some public swimming pools have even extended their hours. National school exams were postponed in France for the first time ever.
