California is experiencing sweltering temperatures, with Death Valley clocking one of the highest temperatures ever recorded on Earth on Sunday and San Francisco, San Jose, Palm Springs and Long Beach setting record highs on Friday.

Death Valley reached 130 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday. Temperatures haven't reached 130 in the area since 1913.

California issued rolling blackouts beginning on Friday, as the state used an excess of power to keep cool in the heat wave. According to the New York Times, the agency that oversees the majority of the state's power grid declared an emergency as energy usage climbed.

California hasn't forced blackouts due to heat since 2001. The blackouts could continue through the week to conserve energy, as demand is expected to remain high through at least Tuesday, and temperatures exceeding 100 degrees are expected in Los Angeles through Thursday.
