3-Year-Old Twins Oliver and Aria Orr Die in Bossier City, Louisiana, After Being Left in Hot Car, Police Say

Two 3-year-old twins died Saturday evening after they were found inside a pickup truck in Bossier City, Louisiana, on a 93-degree day, officials said.

Oliver and Aria Orr were found unresponsive inside that truck in front of the family's home on Saturday afternoon, according to the Associated Press. The mother notified neighbors that she couldn't find them, but after they were found inside the truck, the two toddlers were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead, the report added.

Police and fire officials arrived at the scene just after 3 p.m., according to a statement obtained by the Shreveport Times. Authorities told KTBS.com that the children might have been inside the truck for as long as two hours.

Officials are still investigating the events that led to the two deaths. It's not yet clear how the twins were able to climb inside the truck and become trapped for up to two hours, police told KTBS.com.

The children's father, a Bossier Parish sheriff's deputy, wasn't home at the time of the incident, the report added.

According to Jan Null of San Jose State University's Department of Meteorology and Climate Science, 15 children have died in hot cars so far this year. Twenty-four such deaths were reported in 2015, and on average, 37 children have died in this manner each year since 1998.
