Winter Storm Skylar left tens of thousands in the dark and a mess to clean up after hammering the Northeast on Tuesday with the third nor'easter in just 11 days.

The storm shut down travel on the ground and in the air, and along the coast.

Schools remained closed Wednesday in cities like Boston and Portland, Maine, as local agencies worked to dig out after receiving more than 2 feet of snow in some areas.

Before Skylar moved into the Northeast, it dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of Kentucky and West Virginia, slowing travel dramatically. In North Carolina, some schools were dismissed early Monday afternoon as road conditions worsened and a 31-year-old woman was killed in a weather-related crash.

The winter storm was responsible for knocking out power to more than 65,000 homes and businesses in Kentucky and West Virginia on Monday. By Tuesday, power was knocked out to more than 250,000 in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

We will continue to update the gallery at the top of this page as the storm persists, so be sure to check back frequently for the latest images.
