Waterboro Fire Department Rescues Golden Retriever From Frozen Maine Lake

Linda Park was walking her dog Dakota last week when she let him wander off.

When the 5-year-old golen retriever didn't return from the stroll near Little Ossipee Lake in Waterboro, Maine, Parker figured he was probably under the deck, she told WTMW.

But then, "My neighbor had come running over and knocked on my door telling me Dakota had gone through the ice," she said.

Her neighbor called 911.

"I was worried about how in the world am I going to get him out of there," Park said.Capt. Tom Langevin of the Waterboro Fire Department came to the rescue. Langevin wore an ice-water suit and was tethered by rope as he walked 100 feet over the frozen lake to retrieve Dakota.

Dakota's story quickly spread after the fire department posted photos of the dramatic rescue on its Facebook page last week. The message, according to the department's post: "Ice is not yet safe!"

Park agrees.

"It was a dog that went down, but I think it's an eye-opener for people to realize that they shouldn't be going out on a lake," Park told ABC news.

Park says she wants to raise money so the fire department can purchase a rescue sled, which would make future rescues safer for firefighters.

Dakota wasn't too traumatized by the cold, it seems. After some time by the fireplace, Park told WCSH6 that the pooch indulged in some ice cream.
