Found at Sea: Photographing the Ocean's Many Moods

Photographer Che Chorley swims in all seasons, all conditions and all weather events. For the past two and a half years, he has photographed the waters around Southern Australia and Indonesia.

"I purposefully seek out interesting weather and lighting events to get the mood and drama I desire," Chorley told weather.com. "I'm swimming with my camera in hand and often spend hours bobbing around waiting for the light and weather to cooperate. The challenge of shooting in the ocean is further exacerbated by the fact that these moments will never be repeated; every photograph can only be made once."

Chorley says that his most dramatic images were taken in mid-winter. He enjoys swimming and shooting when the ocean turns wild and he's the only one brave enough to venture in.

"It's a challenge to photograph in an environment that fights back, with wind, waves and currents," Chorley said. "To look through your viewfinder in a world that never stops moving to capture your vision is exciting, frustrating and occasionally scary. There's also the cold– coming out of a session without feeling in your hands and feet is often a price to pay."
