Hurricanes Reveal Electricity Inequity

It could be weeks before many people have power restored after Helene’s impact across the Southeast, and a study found that people in the poorest communities will likely wait the longest. Researchers analyzed more than 588 communities impacted by eight major hurricanes between 2017 and 2020 and found that poorer areas wait an average of 6.1% longer to get their lights back on.
