A flight into the eye of Hurricane Ian in 2022 was an especially rough one for NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters. So much so, that they wondered if it was their bumpiest flight ever. A group of scientists, including two who were on the plane, decided to find out. They analyzed flight data from 2004 to 2023, including storms like Ian and Irma, plus data from two memorably hairy flights in the 1980s.
