More Tornadoes Strike Florida in Late January

Play

A few severe thunderstorms are possible once again in parts of Florida Thursday ahead of an approaching cold front. Elsewhere, severe weather will take a mid-winter breather through the weekend.

Thursday morning, a tornado quickly formed over Delray Beach, before moving offshore, downing trees, powerlines and leaving some minor roof damage in its wake, according to WPTV/Fox 29.

The National Weather Service in Miami said midday Thursday the damage from Delray Beach to Boynton Beach to Ocean Ridge was consistent with an EF0 tornado. NWS meteorologist Arlena Moses noted the terminal doppler radar at Palm Beach International Airport picked up a strong circulation only about 400 feet above the ground, as well.

Additional heavy rain as of Thursday night pushed Vero Beach to 9.23 inches of rainfall so far this month. That sets a record for the wettest January on record at Vero Beach with still three days left in the month.
